Now more than ever we live in a connected world. Information now is distributed through multiple mediums with one theme in mind, “everything is just one click away”. As educators we need to realize that this generation’s need to be connected is not going away, but is essential to their learning experiences, they have never known life without the internet, and social media. As Baird and Fisher have stated in their study of neo-millennial [click here for the study], “the current generation is ‘hardwired’ to simultaneously utilize multiple type of Web-based participatory media…They [neo-millennial] have grown up with the Web, are ‘always on’, and expect to utilize technology in their learning”. Social media sites are the primary sources of where this generation is getting their information. In addition to that a visually appealing web site will keep students coming back, “When teenagers surf the web… interesting features draw them in: big type, lots of pictures, and a reasonable does of respect”. The current generation of students, want less text and more imagery, want interactivity, and to be informed in a quick manner. Hopefully, this page can serve as an introduction to what is available to educators so that they can develop lessons to meet the learning needs of these students whether it be through a weblog, a wiki, a podcast, or some other digital medium.
